Thailand HR Calculators: Tax, Severance, Notice and Overtime
A quick hello from the JST HR team. We have added a set of free tools to the website to help you navigate the parts of Thai employment that people most often get wrong, and to let you check the numbers for yourself before you commit to anything. Whether you are hiring in Thailand for the first time, running payroll here already, or weighing up a job offer, there is something here for you.
They are also a small window into how we work. JST is a technology-led HR business, and we would rather show you than tell you: the rules inside these tools were checked against Thai government sources, are covered by 138 automated tests, and are the same statutory rules our payroll team applies to client payroll every month. Now they are yours to use as well, in English, Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese, with no sign-up.
The five tools
1. What does it cost to hire an employee in Thailand?
Salary is only part of it. This adds the employer's social security and workmen's compensation contributions, provident fund, bonus, work permit costs and the severance liability that starts accruing from day one, for monthly and daily wage bases.

2. Personal income tax and take-home pay
The one tool that was already here. Gross to net with allowances and deductions applied, showing monthly take-home and the effective rate. The number to check before you accept an offer.

3. Overtime and holiday pay
Works out overtime and holiday pay for monthly, daily, hourly and piece-rate employees, across working days, weekly holidays and public holidays, and tells you which part of the law applied.

4. Probation and notice period planner
Enter a hire date, a planned last day and your payroll date. It tells you the earliest date the termination can lawfully take effect, any payment in lieu of notice, and where the employee sits against the 120-day severance threshold. It also explains, for both sides, what a 119-day probation clause does and does not change.

5. Severance pay and final settlement
Builds the whole exit: severance, special severance for relocation or technology redundancy, payment in lieu of notice, untaken leave and outstanding wages, with the deadline against each line, because they are not the same day.

Three things worth checking
These are the rules our team is asked about most, and the ones the tools were built around.
How is severance pay calculated in Thailand?
Severance is due under section 118 once an employee completes 120 days of continuous service, starting at 30 days' wages and rising to 400 days at twenty years. At day 119 nothing is payable; at day 120 the full 30 days is. There is no pro rata and no month-based threshold.
What is the notice period in Thailand?
There is no fixed 30-day notice period. Under section 17, written notice given on or before a wage payment date takes effect on the following payment date. On a month-end payroll, notice served on 10 March runs to 30 April; served on 1 April it runs to 31 May. The same rule binds an employee who resigns, so it also sets the earliest day you can start a new job.
How is overtime pay calculated in Thailand?
Overtime on a working day is 1.5 times the hourly rate. Work on a holiday is one additional time for a monthly-paid employee, whose daily wage is already inside the salary, and two times for a daily-paid employee. Overtime on a holiday is three times. Same shift, different answer, depending on how the person is paid.
How we built them
Every rule in the four employment tools is taken from the Labour Protection Act B.E. 2541 as consolidated by the Office of the Council of State, current to Act No. 9 B.E. 2568. The tax calculator uses the Revenue Department's current rates and allowances. Where a point could not be verified from a Thai government source, the tool says so rather than guessing. Those are the same statutory rules our payroll team applies to client payroll every month, which is why we can put the tools in front of you with a straight face.
They are calculators, not legal advice. They cannot see your contract, your work rules or the facts of an individual case, so take advice from a licensed Thai lawyer before acting on, or contesting, any termination.
If you are hiring in Thailand
You do not need a registered Thai entity to employ someone here. Under an Employer of Record in Thailand arrangement, JST is the legal employer and your team directs the work: contract, monthly payroll, social security filings, and work permits and visas if the hire is a foreign national. Run your first hire through the cost calculator, then send us the role, the location and the salary you have in mind, and we will come back with the full monthly cost and what would still sit with you.

If payroll is already your headache
Thai payroll is rarely hard in any one month. It gets hard across a year, when the occasional cases turn up: a leaver whose final settlement has three different deadlines, a public holiday shift for a daily-rate crew, a written warning that has quietly lapsed. Our Thailand payroll outsourcing service applies the same statutory rules as these tools every month, across mixed workforces of salaried, daily and piece-rate staff, files the withholding and social security returns, and documents the basis for every figure. More than 20 HR specialists, more than 500 employees on payroll.
If you are reconciling this in a spreadsheet, run one recent leaver and one holiday shift through the calculators. If the figures do not match what you paid, tell us how your payroll is set up and we will tell you plainly whether it is worth moving and what a handover would involve.

If you are looking for work
The tools work just as well from the employee's side. The income tax calculator shows what an offer actually pays each month, the overtime calculator shows what a holiday shift is worth, and the severance calculator shows what is due when a job ends and by when. Worth knowing: failing probation is not a ground for withholding severance once you have passed 120 days, and accumulated annual leave is payable even on a dismissal for misconduct.
We recruit engineers, technicians, offshore crew, finance and administrative staff for employers across Thailand and the region. See the roles open now, or send us your CV for future openings. Every CV is reviewed within five business days and your details are used for recruitment only.
All five tools are together on our HR Solutions page. If you would rather have someone run the numbers with you, talk to our HR team. And if you spot something a tool should do and does not, tell us. That is the kind of note we like getting.
